Making their own food can give children a sense of accomplishment, build awareness of nutrition and diet and encourage them to think like producers rather than consumers. Given the freedom to experiment and be creative it can also be tremendous fun. Choose recipes that fit the child's skill levels and interests.

A Special Note about Sandwiches
When my children started school, teachers were surprised that they were familiar with words and mathematical concepts like rectangle, square, triangle, diagonal, halves and quarters. Had I been coaching them? No. These are all things that come as a result of the conversation around making and eating sandwiches.
How do you like your sandwiches cut? Rectangles or triangles. Cut into 2 or 4? And so it goes on. Simple chatter about everyday things builds vocabulary, observation and awareness.
